Solar Oven

Use the desert! One of Heloise's favorite things is the Cardboard Solar Oven. Who wants to slave over a hot stove in the desert? Not me. This thing is great at BM, and I'm always so surprised I've never seen anybody else use one. Seems like a no-brainer to me. You build this thing out of cardboard and tinfoil, set it in the sun by 10:30 a.m., and you can have fabulous hot steaming jambalaya, yankee pot roast, beans and rice - whatever - ready for you to eat and share by 4:00.

Heloise also found you can use this to get that solar shower heated up an hour earlier than by using the sun by itself! Just drop your solar shower in the oven and warm it up while you're preparing that meal.

You can whip this together out of a washing machine box, a roll of tinfoil or mylar, some duct tape and a knife. You'll also need a little black metal chicken pot with a lid (you know the kind - just like your grandmother cooks the turkey in on Thanksgiving. Only smaller...) Pick one up at Goodwill or the Salvation Army store.

Your ingredients:

One washing machine box, if you want to cut it out of one piece of cardboard, this is just about right, and you can make use of the existing folds. You can use a couple of smaller boxes instead, but be sure you've got ample width.

One roll of Aluminum Foil or Mylar - enough to cover one side of the finished cut out cardboard.

An oven roasting bag. The kind you wrap a turkey in.

A couple of jar lids or metal trivet - set this under your pot to lift it off of the bottom of the oven.

Duct Tape - DUH! sure, you can stick this all together with something else, but WHY?

Box knife or scissors

Put it together according to these plans. (You'll find all the info you need at this site). (THIS IS MY FAVORITE, EASIEST TO MAKE SOLAR COOKER!!!) Then make your meal in the chicken pot, put the chicken pot in the roasting bag, put the pot and bag on the trivet in the middle of the oven. Point it to catch the sun, then go enjoy your day. When you come home for dinner, it'll be hot and ready to eat.

For best results, you need to STIR the food in the pot every couple of hours, and keep adjusting the direction of the oven so it collects lots of sun.

The best recipes are the ones i've mentioned, plus just about anything out of that old crockpot cookbook...

Good eating, and invite me over for dinner!

Seeya on the playa!
